Nurturing support for a peaceful, empowered birth experience in Chicagoland.
My approach
At Joyful Blossom, I blend a scientific understanding of birth with a deep, empathetic connection to the families I serve. As a birth doula, my approach is rooted in evidence-based practices that ensure a safe, informed experience while providing the emotional and physical support essential to a positive birth journey. I empower parents with up-to-date research and personalized care plans, while also creating a nurturing space that honors their unique needs and emotions. With me, you’re not only guided through the physiological aspects of labor but also supported on an emotional level, ensuring a holistic, compassionate approach to childbirth.
what is a birth doula?
A birth doula is dedicated to supporting the mother's needs throughout pregnancy and childbirth. Their role is to offer holistic support—mentally, physically, and emotionally—before, during, and after labor.
During labor, a doula provides reassurance, encouragement, and practical help, such as assisting with breathing techniques, guiding relaxation, offering massages, and helping the mother find comfortable positions. The focus is always on making the birthing experience as positive and empowering as possible for the mother.

hi i am sam! your birth doula!
hi i am sam! your birth doula!
My name is Sam Exner, and I am a trained birth doula located in Oswego, IL.
I graduated from Augustana College in 2023 with bachelor’s degrees in pre-medicine and Spanish and a minor in religion. I am pursuing a master’s degree in reproductive science and medicine from Northwestern University. I am applying for PA school next, with the ultimate goal of working in OB/Gyn medicine.
I am passionate about reproductive health and building positive associations with pregnancy and childbirth. I aim to provide pregnant people with science-based information and a comforting presence to ease the fears surrounding childbirth and create a safer and healthier labor and delivery process.
“Prior to our prenatal meeting, Sam and I went over a few of my questions and concerns. During my pregnancy, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I had no idea what that would mean for me and Baby. During our meeting, Sam went through all of my questions and provided me with research to help keep me informed about the upcoming decisions I would need to make. I felt the worry melt away after meeting with her. After our meeting, she provided me with some handouts. One of them really struck me. It was a worksheet on figuring out a birth plan and my desires! There was a corresponding one for my husband. We went through it together, and I got to dive deep into what I really wanted for Baby and I. I am really grateful for all of Sam’s hard work, as well as the comfort she provided”

behind the name “Joyful Blossom”
The name "Joyful Blossom" is inspired by the Joyful Mysteries of the rosary, which honor sacred moments like Mary's pregnancy and the birth of Jesus. "Blossom" is a nod to my own name, Samantha, which is rooted in the Hebrew name Samuel and the Greek word "anthos," meaning blossom. Together, these words reflect both a deep sense of spiritual joy and a personal connection to growth and flourishing.
